Prophet II
My second attempt was a pretty different style, the main features being, a remove-able face mask and horns.
This headdress was still challenge to craft compared to the first. One thing that helped was a just more familiarity with working with the EVA foam, allowing for a more intricate design. I made an enclosed boxed with holes to sand in to keep the foam bits created during sanding, can see it in the photos above. I did have to recreate a few things a couple of times due to poor design, probably due ot my lack of experience.
This one was fastened to the base helmet with a series of velcro pieces but this gave me some issues, will be rethinking this for the future.
Unfortunately this headdress came together in quite a sprint near the end, the paint job and color scheme suffered a bit for it. Something else I could have done better is just more smaller details around the piece. I actually ran into another EVA foam artist on the playa and he said it looked unfinished. However I really love the look of the crystal pyramid at the top and will be trying to use other materials in future builds.
LEARNINGS
This headdress a few things pretty ok and some other things not so well. Visually I feel it is a step up from the previous year but functionally the design had some issues. The horns were not stable enough for how tall they were, I thought they were going to break off some windy night.
One of the nights out someone from last year had recognized me from last year. He “who else has a crazy headdress like that” which was cool to hear, even if it was one person.
One strange problem I felt for the first time was going out alone with the headdress actually presented some problems. Something like trying to use the bathroom with no place to secure the headdress suddenly became an issue.
